Hi Clubhouse fans! 👋
Everyone is new to this app, including us. It is natural to feel a bit overwhelmed.
Below are some questions that we asked ourselves and researched over the last few weeks.
We wanted to share the fruits of our labor with others who are getting started.
Connect with us as we continue to update these questions.
We also host a weekly “Meet the Press” room on Clubhouse, where we interview top journalists who were guests on our “Hospitality Forward” Podcast.
Follow our club “Hanna Lee Communications” and join us every Friday at 12 noon Eastern.
Cheers and see you on Clubhouse!

What is Clubhouse?
It’s an audio social app where users can join chat rooms and hear other users converse while also joining the discussions themselves.
Who should join Clubhouse?
Anyone who wants to network, share insights and get inspired.
How can I invite my friends or clients?
Clubhouse now supports both iPhone and Android!
Are there Clubhouse guidelines to follow?
Yes, Clubhouse has community guidelines. They are updated regularly. Find them by clicking this link.
Once you join Clubhouse, please make sure to read the guidelines and understand the rules.
Which social media apps can I directly link with Clubhouse?
Instagram and Twitter, for now.
How do you join a room?
Search for keywords that you’re interested in. For example: hospitality, food, drinks, travel and entrepreneurship. Join the room!
How do you create a room?
There are two options. Create a room spontaneously or plan your room through your calendar on Clubhouse.
How long can a room session last?
There is no limit.
What’s the most important thing when writing your bio?
The first three lines of your bio are most important as that’s the first thing people see when they click your photo.
Include the keywords that represent your professional field and achievement. Also, emojis are searchable.
For example, if you are in hospitality, food and drink emojis such as 🥩 and 🍸 should be included. If you have won an award, use 🏆.
Can I tag other Clubhouse members in my bio?
Yes! Clubhouse released a new feature to tag other Clubhouse members in your bio. Simply put @ and their username to link their profile.
How can I search for clubs?
Click the magnifying glass in the top left hand corner. Clubhouse will then take you to the “Explore” page. From there, type in the keywords and find the people and clubs section.
How do I get more followers?
Be strategic and remember one follower at a time.
Follow those who you want to connect with.
Engage via their Instagram and Twitter by direct messaging.
How many people can I follow? What is the cap?
You can follow up to 2,500.
Can I change my name once I join Clubhouse?
Yes, you can. But you are allowed to change it only once.
What does a green star mean next to the name?
It means that person is the moderator.
What does it mean when there is a specific name of the Club underneath a club member’s name?
That person is in that room listening and participating.
When it says 10 min, 20 min, 30 min, etc. under a Clubhouse member’s name with a grey circle, what does it mean?
The timestamp indicates the last time that person was online on Clubhouse.
How can I be a moderator?
There are two ways:
When you create your own room, you become automatically a moderator for the room you organized.
When you join a room that you are interested in, that specific room’s creator/moderator can make you a moderator spontaneously.
What’s the difference between moderator, speaker and audience in a room?
A moderator is the one who manages the flow of the room, chooses the speakers, manages the conversations and tracks the time.
A speaker is someone who was invited by the moderator to share their thoughts on the subject they are discussing.
The audience is everyone who is in the room who are not moderators or speakers. Often, the audience raises their hands, moderators pick and choose who to bring to the stage. Those chosen from the audience and invited to the stage become speakers. Here, the moderators and speakers are on the same stage together.
What is PTR?
“Pull To Refresh” which means holding your thumb on the blank white space and swiping down. Here, you will see a loading circle appear instantly at the top of the screen. This will refresh the room. Afterwards, you will also see the new moderators and speakers inside the room and those that changed their profile photos.
You will hear ‘PTR’ often from the moderator throughout the session.
How do I search for like-minded people who share the same interests?
You can search by keywords or emojis.
In the room, what is the difference between on the stage, speakers and listeners?
On the Stage
Moderators have a green and white asterisks at the bottom-right corners of their profile photos and appear at the top of the list.
Also, if the audience raises their hands and then the moderator invites that person to the stage, then that person will be sharing the stage.
The host and the first moderator are the same.
Speakers
Speakers are both moderators and audience members who are invited to the stage.
To become a speaker, a moderator must add you to the stage.
Speakers can normally mute themselves while on stage if they are not speaking or the host or the moderator can mute the rest of the folks on the stage.
Listeners
Listeners are everyone who isn't a speaker or moderator.
Joining a room makes you a listener by default. Your mic is muted and nobody can hear you unless you are added to the stage by a moderator or unmute yourself.
How far in advance can you schedule a room?
You can create a room up to three months in advance.
How soon/early should you announce a room? 24 hours? 1 week? 1 month?
One week in advance. Start promoting it on social media channels on a regular basis. Heavily promote it on the same day so people can remember to tune in.
Can I create a link to promote my Clubhouse profile?
Yes, you can! Just tap the new “share” icon on your profile.
You can share the link directly on Linkedin, Facebook and Twitter. You can also Airdrop the link or text it.
Can I create a link to promote my club?
Yes, you can! Click the three dots on the right hand corner and then click “Share Club.” You can share the link directly on Linkedin, Facebook and Twitter. You can also Airdrop the link or text it.
For those who are on the section of “Followed by Speakers,” are they automatically placed there or does the moderator designate them there?
No. It shows automatically in the order of joining the room.
If someone pings you and you press “dismiss,” does that person instantly get a notification that you said no?
No. Don’t worry, you are not hurting their feelings, since they don’t know.
When you ping someone and the person who is pinged joins the room, does the moderator get a notification?
No.
Can I record a room?
Yes, you can record a room. However, you have to announce to the entire room, including speakers and audience members, that you will be recording.
It is also advisable to ask each speaker for their express permission to record them when they are about to speak.
How can I show that I agree with what the moderator is saying?
Only those who are on stage can applaud by clicking their speaker on and off.
What does ✌mean in a room?
It means you are leaving the room.
What does “Leave quietly” mean at the bottom-left corner of the screen?
If you press the phrase “Leave quietly,” it simply exits you from the room.
This function is more for those who are on the stage. Instead of making an announcement, they can depart without changing the flow of the conversation.
How do you invite friends to the room you are in?
Press the plus button on the lower right corner. Type in your friend's name and invite!
What does 🎉mean?
It means that you are a newbie in Clubhouse! The celebratory party hat stays next to your profile photo for seven days.
Can you customize the color of your hand?
If you hold the hand icon on the lower right corner, it will give you options to change the color to your preference.
When you are creating a room, is the name of the event and name of the room the same?
Yes.
What does ‘Hallway’ mean?
The hallway is all rooms that are happening during that time frame, especially the club or the people that you are following. It is the first page you see.
If you “hide” a specific room on your hallway, is it gone forever?
No it is not hidden forever. You just need to find where it would appear in the hallway again and click “unhide.”
What’s the difference between an open room, social room and closed room?
Open Room
Open to all Clubhouse members.
Social Room
The people you follow.
Closed Room
Invite-only.
How do I check who is active in the room?
Swipe the panel left.
What does “Available to Chat” mean?
You can see your mutual follows on Clubhouse.
What does “online” mean in this panel underneath a person’s profile name?
It means someone is currently using Clubhouse.
What does it mean when it says someone is in a room with you underneath a person’s profile name?
It means that person is in the same room as you are in that moment.
What's the difference between a room and a club?
People speak with each other as participants in a Clubhouse room.
A club is where a founder creates a group and where the group can be followed.
Once you follow a club, the founder can make you a member, where you have access to member-only perks or you can continue to be a follower, where you can see rooms when club members create them.
In a club, there are three types of users, including founder/administrator, member and follower.
One way to think about it is that creating an independent room is like having a special gathering at a bar or restaurant. You decide to get together, share a special moment and celebrate something. When the event is over, everyone goes their own way.
On the other hand, hosting a room as part of a club is like hosting a dinner party in a permanent home, whether your own or someone else’s.
How do I create a club on Clubhouse?
As of Friday, March 5, Clubhouse allows anyone who downloaded the app to create a club.
In the past, you had to run three rooms, but this is no longer a requirement.
Go to the bottom of your profile and you will see the plus sign to the right of the clubs that you follow.
When you click the plus sign, you can follow the step-by-step instructions.
If you don’t see a plus sign, your Clubhouse app has not been updated.
We just created our own club today, Hanna Lee Communications.
Please feel free to follow us.
What’s the difference between a follower and a member on Clubhouse?
Members have access to member-only rooms and can create a room under the club.
Followers don't have access to member-only rooms.
On the bottom of your profile, the club’s logo is shown on the left side. Any clubs that you are following, show on the right side of your profile.
What’s the role of an admin in the club?
The admin has the same power as the creator.
During the panel session in the room under that club, the admin can remove moderators, as well as the creator. So, think twice when you are adding the admin to your club, only someone you can trust.
